Originally named Palo Alto General Hospital, the facility was renamed Dibble Army Hospital or Dibble General Hospital to honor Colonel John Dibble who was killed in an aircraft crash in 1943. The U.S. Army bought the estate of Mark Hopkins, the California railroad and hotel magnate, including the Thurlow Lodge as a place to care for the thousands of soldiers injured in the South Pacific in World War II.
